Wadena and District Search and Rescue (WADSAR) was put on First Alert or standby at 12:45 p.m. on Feb. 2 by Sgt. Burton Jones. The Civil Air Search and Rescue plane had been dispatched to cover the area thought to be the highest probability of detection, flying over the Wadena area and several others. RCMP detachments from Rose Valley, Foam Lake and Wadena combed the grid roads all day and well into the night. Neither air nor ground search proved successful.
Volunteers and concerned members of the public were searching, but no one was sure what direction Daviduk had gone, thus hindering a comprehensive search. On Thursday at 10.30 a.m., volunteers and WADSAR members began leaving the town hall in Wadena on an organized grid search, with the aim of ensuring that ground that may have been searched on previous days had in fact been searched.
More than 20 volunteers searched an area from Wadena south to the north shore of the Quill Lakes, west to Watson, north to Kelvington, east to Lintlaw and Preeceville, south to Margo and Foam Lake, and west back to Wadena. At sunset, volunteers scaled down the search.
On Friday at 10 a.m., 31 volunteers and nine WADSAR members along with local conservation officers and the RCMP again resumed the search, which stretched from Humboldt to Rama and from south of Wynyard to north of Barrier Lake. As of late Friday afternoon when the Wadena News went to press, there had been no report of Daviduk being located and WADSAR stood down officially at 6 p.m. when the last search team made it home safely. Due to the overwhelming volunteer support, a search area of about 10,000 square kilometres had been covered, a roughly 100 km radius from Wadena.
Mike Daviduk’s truck bears the Saskatchewan licence plate 872 JNZ. If you have seen it or heard from him, please contact Wadena RCMP at 306-338-6500.
