The Wadena News is very excited to announce that Byron Nelson, former Wadenan and owner of Leland Industries, along with three drivers from the Canadian Pinty’s NASCAR series has decided to visit Wadena for only the second time in a decade.
The teams will arrive on July 21 from approximately 2-4 p.m. There will be a parade of the cars and crew down Main Street, an autograph session and time for fans to chat with the drivers.
Stretch your minds back to July 2009 when the RCMP escorted the race cars down Main Street, the thunder and roar rumbled through town. The Hon. June Draude, then MLA, presented Saskatchewan flags to each member of the team. Young and old were able to get up close and see what makes a NASCAR work.
“We are extremely excited that former Wadenan Byron Nelson of Leland Industries, who sponsors car No. 64, along with two of the the drivers, Mark Dilley and the legendary Kerry Micks, plus one other driver and car, can take the time out of their extremely hectic schedules to come back to Wadena,” says Wadena News publisher Alison Squires.
“Having the NASCAR series in Saskatoon has been a huge boost for racing fans in Saskatchewan and there’s nothing like the thunder and excitement when those cars rev their engines,” said Squires.
The parade will start in front of the Wadena Hotel on First Street NE at Pamela Wallin Drive where the cars will be unloaded. It will proceed with local RCMP Constable Hamon-Boulay leading the way to Main Street, north on Main Street to Second Avenue, then east on Second Avenue and back to First Street NE to the grassy lot beside the Wadena News for an autograph session.
“Even watching the cars being unloaded and loaded is just a small view of the mechanics of travelling with them and how the crew works together,” said Squires.
“The Town of Wadena has been very gracious in helping to organize the event, making sure that all the bases are covered,” said Squires, “along with the Wadena Food Bank, who will provide a food tent, and Shadow House Concerts, who is providing the sound system.”
