On the morning of Jan. 21, Wadena Elementary School students were treated to some curling tips from Susan Lang, a competition coach with CurlSask. The purpose of the clinic, said Lang, is “to raise awareness of the game, people’s perception of the game, and to get people onto the ice.”
She travels all over Saskatchewan, providing clinics for all. The Grade 4 class pictured here was first taught stretching exercises, which led into working on balance on the ice. Once that was understood, “slide with a frame” had the children stretching out in long slides down the lanes.
The next exercise combined the balance and slide exercises and added weight by using two rocks to strengthen muscles. The last exercise in the 45-minute lesson was sweeping and the correct way to hold a brush. Finally, students had to throw a rock, brush in hand.
No sooner had the Grade 4s completed and put the exercises into practice than the Grade 5s were knocking on the doors!
