The Bruce Brownlee foursome of skip Brent Franko, third Bruce Brownlee, second Al Wheatley and lead Trevor Brownlee took home the Wadena Co-op Event hardware as they bested a very strong field of curlers during the week-long event held Feb. 3-8. In this hard-fought, low-scoring affair, experience triumphed over youth. Brownlee’s crew had their hands full with Dustin Mikush and his team as they battled hard but came up just short. This young team will be heard from for years to come, as they get better each time out.
Winning the R-J Sales Event was the Wadena Co-op team of skip Marion Jesmer, third Pat Casement, second Laird Lappi and lead Sharon Rorquist. This final against the Lyle Leach squad was decided on the final stone. Jesmer had to make a difficult tapback on an opposition rock, hidden on the button, for the win.
Capturing the Wheatbelt Sales trophy was the Scott Comfort foursome of skip Comfort, third Chad Moir, second Marcy Comfort and lead Erica Moir. They out-dueled Brian Nelson’s crew in a well-played final.
Taking the Viterra Event trophy was the Bobby Reynolds rink, sans Reynolds. Reynolds had come down with the flu and the team had to scramble for curlers all bonspiel. The final look of the team had Rob Mayor skipping, with Blaine Hansen third, second Denise Mayor and lead Joshua Mayor. They beat the odds and a stubborn Bill Anderson team for the win.
Garry Leach, one of the organizers who did a commendable job of hosting the event, thanked all the local businesses for their generous support of this farmer-oriented bonspiel. The 20 teams were equally appreciative of the efforts of the host committee.
A tip of the tam o’shanter to all the volunteers who made this yet another successful Wadena Farmers’ Bonspiel.
