Wadena Composite School’s latest accomplishment is having its 2012-13 yearbook named first runner-up in its category in the Saskatchewan School Newspaper and Yearbook Competition sponsored by the Saskatoon StarPhoenix, the Regina Leader Post and the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation.
The yearbook, titled Behind These Eyes, was the first runner-up in the under-150 high school enrolment category. The WCS Yearbook Club consisted of a crew of seven at the time of publication, including Layne Sanderson (editor and photographer), Shayna Campbell (assistant editor), Brittany Andreas (layout), Kaelen Hoffmueller (layout), Josie Bjerland (layout), Julia Pomedli (layout) and Mrs. Shelly Campbell (advisor).
Yearbooks were judged on artwork, creative writing, articles, photographs, layout and design, and overall appearance. Praised especially for its excellent design, photography and writing, Behind These Eyes got tremendous feedback. The judge, Regina Leader Post columnist Will Chabun, had this to say about it.
“In several years of judging, I’ve never seen a yearbook with so much good, imaginative photography. I was impressed not only by the photographs, but the number of events and activities covered by the volunteer staff. Obviously, a tremendous amount of effort went into this — more than I’ve seen from other yearbooks in this category. The photography and design are strong and there are a lot of interesting feature articles.”
“We put a lot of effort into this book,” says Shelly Campbell, “especially Layne, because she did a lot of photography. We made sure every student was included in the book, and left nobody out. Our goal was to have the reader see through somebody else’s eyes and to make the book very individualized and personal, which was a great theme but really hard to pull off.”
The first place winner of the same category was Eastend School’s yearbook, Sweet Memories.
