Pee Wees show well at provincials

On July 12-13, the Wadena Wildcats 14-and-under boys’ softball team competed in Shellbrook against the Spiritwood Stingers and the Saskatoon Raiders for the provincial 14U B title. The Wildcats, coached by Derek Ochitwa and Dwight Pomedli, won two of the three final games and brought home the silver medal.

This was a startup year for the 14U team as only four players – Chase Lazar (third base), Lucas Ochitwa (first base/pitcher), Nathen Pomedli (pitcher/first base) and Tanner Turkenburg (outfield) – had competed in provincial softball before. It was a challenge to find enough players to compete in this age group. Hometown boys Brody Rumbold (backcatcher), Duston Burghardt (outfield), Tyson Byman (centerfield), Tyson Mcnab (outfield) and Leevi Sowa (backcatcher) joined the team and put in months of practice to improve their skills. With the addition of two out-of-town boys, Ben Rokochy (shortstop) and Andrew Schaab (second base), the lineup was complete.

The team was well outfitted, with support from Wadena Minor Sports, which donated new team jerseys; the Ochitwa and Gutek families, who donated backcatcher equipment; and the Pomedli family, who donated helmets.
